it seems like people are always "eh i just want to see some pictures. i want an idea of what susanna's work is like. no bells and whistles. just picture picture picture." here are some pictures. they are very emblematic of my work. i like natural light. I like environments. i like character study. i love secretly funny people and hidden stories in pictures. portraiture is really my passion. i love clothes. i love big nature. i love california. new england makes me wistful. i am very nostalgic. i get nostalgic for experiences i never had. does that make me a romantic?

one of my favorite subjects, eleonore hendricks. a most wonderful woman who we chose in the first round of pictures for julia leach's gorgeous stripes line, Chance.
mariko mori, look up her work. it is astounding. in her pristine studio. she's magic.
if you have a bunch of models who are misbehaving, make them pretend to read.
tom sachs at his studio door. i think this one was for V magazine. he's had that studio as long as i've known him, at least 20 years. it's part of his body at this point.
the national, probably the nicest, smartest rockstars around. in the vale of cashmir, prospect park, brooklyn.
backstage at the kenedy center, washington.
a real marfa cowboy. i fell in love.
swimsuit story for new york magazine fashion issue. i love that part of the summer where you wear your bathing suit all day long but hide from the sun indoors.
gael garcia for W magazine. i shot this in my friend phil's apartment on washington square park, where i used to stay a lot. the combination of gael in phil's apartment drives me wild with happiness.
leaning.
matt fishbeck and ariel pink asked me to take some pictures of them for their collaboration HOLY SHIT. we spent the morning trudging around tuna canyon in malibu. no matter how gorgeous, everything just looks like two dumb guys until you just say, "kiss!"
vampire weekend for GQ. this was them waiting between elaborate setups. between times are best, no?
donna tartt for town and country. she was finally back from hiding. i had been a huge secret history fan, and when we shot this, i hadn't read the goldfinch yet. i was so excited to have her over that we made cocktails and smoked.
if you have to shoot someone in the studio every few months for a very long day, you can't beat jon batiste as a subject. always game, never tired. i love taking portraits of people holding portrait post cards. he picked james baldwin right away (i am not your negro is insanely good if you haven't seen it)
tom sachs for italian vogue
this little dog is one of many little dogs who sit in little boxes waiting to scurry down holes during foxhunts.
from my joan didion in los angeles fashion story for index magazine
luise stauss and christine muhlke. best friends in stripes.
the kings of leon were dropped off at my house in echo park and we piled in my ancient vw fastback to drive to elysian park. their young, church-scrubbed faces had never been on hills as steep as baxter. one of the younger ones in the back seat grabbed me around the neck in the drivers' seat. i think he really thought we were gonna die.
misty copeland backstage right before her first lead performance for abt. i was trying to be invisible. i cannot imagine what she felt like, but she was cool as a cucumber.
isn't michael cera a curious genius? he doodled the whole time we shot. i have the doodles. they are of funny raindrops.
david coggins. a portrait of white male angst.
andy spade, my aesthetic brother.
yes yes the grey dress on the 80s supermodel, but there is someone in that TV!
eleonore hendricks and eliza douglas for new york magazine fashion issue. we did a story about art school kids hanging around in the woods around bard college.
nelly for the london sunday telegraph magazine. we were at a prison in new mexico. that is a story.
john fergason. artist. also magic.
lenny kravitz at home in miami. i lost these negatives. ugh.
dysfunctional christmas fashion story. new york magazine. lots of amazing casting in this one. shot in my old friend ethan smith's parents' apartment in the apthorp. crazy shoot.
mya lin in her studio in soho. she is badass.
jenny lewis in bed in los angeles for rolling stone magazine.
few places symbolize more to me. netty's was mentioned in the beastie boys song, way before i knew what it was. when i first moved to silverlake, i would often see john c reilly camped out there on a weekday with a bunch of newspapers. it disappeared just as i was leaving. this photo was part of a series i did for a show at colette in paris I HEART LA.
miles, one of my fave models. from aldo shoot in tofino.
my first hedges show was happy contained, which you can find in the ephemera section. this is from a more recent series of hedges, that i made in palm beach. i really love hedges.
my fashion story the birds of telegraph hill, shot in san francisco for C magazine. i had just seen that amazing documentary about the parrots who live on telegraph hill.
catalina sandino moreno for details.
this was eleonore's friend who came to the studio one day and i just loved his rawness. this was not his alligator shirt.
i was that girl who had the nureyev feet poster in the '80s. killed me. dancers' feet are like other people's faces.
this pic and the next are from a fashion story for esquire magazine. i originally wanted it to be about intellectual new york jews. but mainstream magazines aren't so into that, so it became this story of sort of prep school looking boys. i still love it.
from a story about the woolworth family for town and country. one crazy weekend in maine.
maya rudolph, gracefully hiding one of her million pregnancies. holy moly she is a powerhouse.
jack spade still lives are fun, because i just do them really fast. i can't really deal with the minutia of a still life picture that takes all day.
tiger woods for rolex
i got fixated on using these butterflies on wires. everyone was so sick of me trying to nonchalantly twist them onto things.
this dog came out of nowhere and walked up to donald because he had a muffin. happy accident.
we shot this girl for the art school fashion story at bard. i don't think she had ever put a dress on in her life, but comme des garcons didn't seem to offend her. this picture always sticks with me for some reason.
my happy place.
